Grabbing Defeat from the Jaws of Victory

In an election for Republicans that should be a no-brainer, here we have a situation that fellow Republicans are trying to self-immolate by fighting amongst themselves.

In our quest for anointing a “pure” Conservative as our candidate, we have embarked on a campaign of self-destruction. President Obama, with his pitiful record of failure and poor choices, is licking his chops as the Republican candidates trash each other. The election in November should be a shoo-in for a Republican candidate. But, is it now?

All the Republican candidates, with maybe the exception of Ron Paul, would be better than what we have in the White House now. With Obama's massive campaign war chest, you can bet that his smear machine will be geared to trash whoever ends up as the nominee. Obama cannot use his record of “successes” during his first term, so he will have to use the “politics of personal destruction” as his modus operandi.

So who is most prone to be most hurt by these expected attacks? It would seem to be Newt Gingrich as he's had many more years of being in elected office and has many more votes to be vetted by the Democrats in a negative light. This will be an “anal exam” like no other. The biggest problem with Newt Gingrich is that other than his stellar debate performances and his political knowledge, he does not have the personal charm or lack of “personal baggage” that Mitt Romney seems to have in order to attract the Independents who generally decide elections. Could Gingrich motivate the conservative Democrats (referred to as Reagan Democrats) or will he be viewed negatively by voters who do not have a party affiliation or party loyalty? Nobody knows for sure, but all we can do is imagine what the Democrats will focus on in the general election.

There is no question that Newt Gingrich has hit a responsive chord in the Republican electorate and it has propelled him to the top or near the top. Once that “brashness” toward the media (which is well deserved) wears off, will Newt be able to fend off the quirks of his personality and his political missteps from his past? In other words, is he the most electable candidate we can put up?

In our opinion, either Gingrich, Romney, and Santorum are better for our country than what we have now disgracing our country, but the candidate we feel less likely to be demonized by the Obama smear machine and therefore be more electable, is Mitt Romney, therefore we urge you to support Romney for the Republican nomination as the one most likely to beat Obama in November.

If that will not be the case, we will support either Gingrich or Santorum, with gusto, as the better alternative to Obama. We cannot afford 4 more years of the Obama Marxist/Socialist policies.

This might not be a positive, but I see the Sun-Sentinel agrees with you on your endorsement of Romney. Since the paper doesn't have a "dog in the fight" they can praise s Republican without any blowback. It would be great if they carried this endorsement to the November elections, but don't hold your breath. With the exception of the Editorial Page Editor, Antonio Fins, the rest of the editorial board are flaming liberals and prone to rubber stamp any liberal Democrat candidate, no matter how poorly he has performed as an office holder, including Barack Hussein Obama..

Take your pick between 3 big government Republicans who will increase the size of government or Obama... This is a hard choice. There is no difference between the four. Within the next 8 eight years, deficits will rise, regulations will rise, prices will rise and we will be poorer.
All three Republicans are NOT conservatives...

It isn't a matter of picking the one with the best values, because that would be Rick Santorum. Even conservatives in the media have mimimized him when they could have given him the Madison Avenue treatment to make him shine. Unfortunately it is a political game and Romney will have to be the pick.
It is important to back any one of the three, whoever becomes the candidate, instead of staying home, moping because your choice didn't make it. Obama, Pelosi, Reed and Wasserman-Schultz should give you reason.

I agree with Mr. George that Santorum is a fine person. I disagree with the Anonymous as I think Santorum is a Conservative. No one is perfect. However I believe Mitt will be the nominee. There is no comparison with the 3 Republicans and BHO.

Our local liberal newspaper also endorsed Romney citing his Romenycare as the basis of Obamacare.

Sad to say, but I don't think any of the current crop of candidates will beat Obama. Since you deal with why you think Romney is better, I will deal only with him.

The major reasons why Romney won’t win against Obama in my opinion:
1. He is not a good debater. His debate style is reminiscent of John McCain. Even without a teleprompter Obama will kill him in the debates; 2. His Mormon religion with its hostility to gays, blacks, etc. will turn off many women voters – even those who are conservative. 3. Obama will crucify him on Romneycare in MA. Romney attempt to distinguish it from Obomacare is disingenuous. Keep in mind Romeny pushed through health care legislation when he was a lame duck governor and could not seek re-election. 4 So far, Romney has not brought out the passion to bring out voters to the polls. The fact that he is “a better choice than Obama” won’t bring out voters to the polls. 5. Romney position on the bailouts is almost identical to that of Obama. 6. Romney has taken inconsistent positions on gun control, global warming, tax cuts, and health care mandates. 7. There are some excellent videos out there on Romney when he was running against Ted Kennedy. His views on abortion, for example, were more liberal than Kennedy. 8. When he ran against Kennedy he said Newt Gingrich’s “Contract With America” was too partisan, and opposed capital-gains-tax cuts, vowed to encourage banks to give home loans to poor families, and, “stressed his support for universal health insurance and abortion rights.” His flip flops now will make John Kerry look like a stalwart. In fact, one of Kennedy’s great comments on Romney was “he isn’t pro-choice or anti-choice, he’s multiple choice.”

I am depressed! Can't stand the thought of Obama re-elected.

I am sorry to say but when it was time to stand up for your beliefs and not give in to pressure, Santorum withered. He endorsed Arlen Spector. That says it all.

Newt sounds like a democrat bashing Romney for his taxes. And reality is he never did balance a budget. He balance by taking funds from Social Security (and now we know why that is broke)

Romney is a moderate, he speaks well as does Newt, but he is a moderate.

So there you have almost all your picks. And the fourth option ((Ron Paul) who is by far the most consistent fiscal conservative person their will never be considered because Republicans want to be like liberals and go around and spend money on every country in the world to buy favor while we in the middle class slowly get poorer.) will never be selected because he painfully tells the truth.

As an economy, we will be bound to stay as we are until a dramatic change occurs. And the three Big Government Republicans will not bring those sacrafices to bear.

To Anonymous, Santorum was between a rock and a hard place. The result was Surpreme Court Judges that are pro- America. Look at the 2 picked by BHO, a Racist and a ???

Ron Paul a conservative? On spending only. His remarks on our Military are similar to Obama.

Why does he continue to get more donations from the military than all the other candidates combined?

Hmm, maybe since they are on the front lines, they think he is right!

It is what conservatives use to be about. Now they support NDAA, the Patriot Act, going to war without a Declaration of War (which is clearly stated in the Constitution), SOPA, Medicare Drug Plan, No Child Left Behind... You get the idea! A real Conservative is for the absolute minimization of the Federal government and strengthening of States rights and individual rights. The absolute elimination of the Central Bank (a truly socialist idea if there is one, being able to control the entire economy through a hand full of men in a room. Sounds like what they do in China these days)...
