IS There Such a Thing as a Double Standard?

Is Michael Moore ugly and fat? The answer to both questions is YES!

Let’s define what we mean: A double-standard means that there are two sets of rules for the same situation. There is one set of rules for a favored group and a set of unfair rules for other groups.

We’ve all heard the expression of “do as I say, not as I do”, which is a pithy way of describing it.

In politics, it is quite evident that a double-standard exists. For instance, President Obama has a penchant to criticize the large corporations as not paying their fair share and exploiters of the poor and middle class, but he seems to have no qualms about receiving political donations from his “fat cat” corporate friends from Hollywood and Wall Street. It seems like every other sentence he utters, the words “middle class” seems to tumble out of his mostly scripted mouth. Being an “evil” 1%’er himself, you’d think his conscience would bother him from taking that “blood money” from the wealthy liberal elites he associates with, but after listening to him for the past 5 years, it looks like he doesn’t have much of a conscience. In fact, he shows his gratitude by giving his “evil” corporate friends waivers and subsidies (ex. Solyndra) as a payback for their largesse.

Today, the Congressional Black Caucus (all Democrats) are complaining about the various states passing voter laws that require potential voters to prove who they are before casting a vote. They claim that is “voter suppression”, even though those laws apply to Whites, Asians, Native Americans, Blacks etc. Since the Congressional Black Caucus are all Democrats, it was amazing that last year during the Democratic National Convention, all people entering the arena or convention hall, had to show a picture I.D. to be able to enter, regardless of their race, color, or ethnic identity. Where was the outrage? That’s a double-standard.

Another example is in racial language. It is widely considered that it is O.K. for ethnic minorities to use racial epithets about their own race while other races are not allowed to use those same words, under penalty of social ostracism (blacks can use the word “nigga” but Paula Deen or whites cannot). That’s a double-standard.

In gender situations, women are treated far more leniently, most of the time, than men for committing the same acts. An adult male having sex with a minor (female or male) will most likely be treated more harshly than an adult woman doing the same act to a minor. That is a double-standard.

Just in the last few years, in politics, the Democrats used pejorative terms to describe President George W. Bush. Terms like idiot, fascist, baby killer, drunk etc., etc. were common. There was no outcry by the left (or very little) for this incivility toward the President, but today, if you criticize President Obama, the Democrats and the people on the left, call those Obama nay-sayers “racists”, “bigots” etc. That’s a double-standard if there ever was one.

We could go on and on in this age of “political correctness”, to point out all the types of double-standards that exist, but space is limited, but I’m sure you get the idea.

Yes Virginia, there is a double-standard and it is alive and well, here in the good ole U.S.A. (unfortunately).

MORT's meanderings

Unqualified. Unsuited. Unfit.
Our country is being driven on a fast-track toward certain destruction by an unbelievably large percentage of our elected officials.  This includes the currently-serving President, his  entire administration and an overwhelming majority of those currently serving in the U. S. Congress.  I state without equivocation, that there are far too many who are unqualified, unsuited and unfit to hold their offices.  Moreover, they are by extension, unqualified, unsuited and unfit to govern our affairs.
Furthermore, these people are enabled and assisted in their misguided efforts, by multitudes of  appointees and advisors who are equally unqualified, unsuited and unfit to advise.
After a seriously considered assessment of the most common motivations that could possibly be driving  those whom I accuse - I've come to the conclusion  sadly, that the endemial spread of corruption and malfeasance is directly attributable to a large majority of politically-motivated and patently self-centered, elected officials.  This assessment extends also, to a large majority of their appointees and the descending chain of associated enablers.  It is all simply, too staggering to contemplate. The reality is embarrassing to admit and so, therein lies a big part of the problem.
There are exceptions, of course.  There are many men and women of principle who are totally dedicated and completely committed to thoughtful and honest service, not only to their own constituencies but also, to the entire citizenry of the United States.  This goes as well, for those men and women to whom we owe so much - those who serve in our Military - our Armed Forces. They are to be honored, revered and given our maximum support for their adherence to the tenets of and to the original intent of The Constitution.  These are true representatives of the people, who believe in the value of the principles and traditions that have made this nation 'exceptional'.  Let me state without reservation, my strongly-held opinion that anyone who does not share these principles and these values, cannot be considered as a worthy citizen of this great nation. Is that clear enough?
Elections have consequences.  We've been through five years of our nation being  convulsed by the imposition of many-times failed ideologies and the unprecedented application of extremely tyrannical regulations & controls set upon all aspects of our American life.  We've been brought to the brink of economic collapse by egregiously irresponsible spending policies that are unique to this President and his enabling Democrats.  Plus, some reckless Republicans in the Congress.  We've been brought to a condition of such ineffective border security, that our national sovereignty is not longer valid.  Crime, terrorism, racism, street violence and the widening encroachment of vehemently anti-Semitic, anti-Christian, anti-American Islamists have been permitted to take over our nation.  These forces are now, right now - operating freely and unfettered; they are completely out of control.
It is the obligation of every single citizen to face up to these abhorrent  situations, educate themselves regarding practical solutions and then, set about making the changes necessary to save our nation. Don't ask, 'What can I do?'  It is your civic duty to investigate on your own and then, take appropriate action that is within your capability. You can do it.  If not you - - then who?

"Sell the Sizzle”

When I taught marketing during my teaching career at Syosset High School, I used some of the sales techniques of a well-known guru of master salesmanship, named Elmer Wheeler. One of his famous sales points and the full sentence of the above headline was; “Don't Sell the Steak, Sell the Sizzle”. This phrase referred to the sales point that people don't buy the product itself (the steak), they buy what the product will do for them (the sizzle).

That's what Obama and the Democrats tried to do (and succeeded with the Democrat controlled Congress) in selling that monstrosity of a health care plan called Obamacare. They completed the sale by using the “sizzle” to claim that Obamacare would do great things for millions of people. Through manipulation, bribes, cajoling, and backroom deals, they got a willing Democrat Congress to pass it. No Republicans voted for it.

Meanwhile, as more and more information came out (no one actually knew what was in the bill because no one read the 2,700 page bill - Speaker Pelosi even said that “we will know what is in the bill after we pass it”), the people turned against it back in 2010 and even more so today, as over 60% of the people now think that it should be repealed. The “sizzle” points of lower medical costs and lower premiums, the claim that you could keep your own doctor regardless, that premiums would go down, and that Medicare wouldn't be affected etc., were all found to be not true. So after the people were sold on the “wonderful” benefits of this health care proposal, the people decided the product didn't meet the standards they were told was in the bill.

I guess the old adage of “You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time” really applies to this boondoggle.

The representatives in Congress are now in the process of trying to repeal the bill in total even though it does contain some worthwhile provisions. The Republicans, knowing that we need some reform of health care, want to repeal it and start over from scratch, and craft a new bill with true bi-partisan input, which was totally lacking in the legislation that was passed only by a the Democrat vote in Congress and signed by the President.

The efforts by the present Congress might become moot if they let the provisions of Obamacare go forward without a fight. Since that disastrous decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, which validated Obamacare by saying that the government has the power to tax its citizens for health care (when Obama and the Democrats said it wasn't a tax, but a fee). Chief Justice John Roberts should be ashamed of himself for casting the deciding vote to uphold Obamacare (a 5-4 vote).

Let's hope the Republicans don't fold like a cheap camera by compromising their principles and acceding to the cajoling of the Democrats. Rather, go down to defeat (if need be) with your head held high rather than to meekly give in to that monstrosity of a job killer called Obamacare, an insidious piece of legislation if there ever was one.

So, many people were sold the “sizzle” of Obamacare, but later on found that the “steak” was unfit for consumption, and they demanded their money back. I think they'll get a refund. At least, I hope so.

Aren't you glad you voted for Obama?

It took decade upon decade to try to erase racism. Much progress was made
since the 60's toward this end.

Many bloody battles were fought toward worker rights that gave us the
40 hour week, before unions over stepped their purpose.

The American dream was to own your own home and build equity and pass it
on to your children, for them to built from your sweat and toil.

Naively the politically unsophisticated thought by voting for a black,
smooth talking politician like Barack Obama, with promises that a new
America will rise for prosperity and equality for everyone, and that
it will finally bury racial prejudice forever.

During his tenure in the presidency we can approximate 46 million people
on food stamps, 14 million unemployed...about 1 in 13, and 1.4 million
losing their homes.

White against black is becoming more apparent with the gap becoming wider
each time he opens his mouth.

The 40 hour week will vanish because of the nonsensical demands made by
unions in the past and the Affordable Care Health Act, a.k.a Obamacare
criteria. Most of the work force will become shifts of part time workers.
The middle class has been caught between big government and greedy
corner office executives.

The middle class is fading as is the dream to owning a home, where
construction for rental properties is increasing in many cities and home
town America. The bank barons make it impossible for the individual to
secure a loan leaving venture capitalists to gobble up many of the
foreclosures with cash.

Are these the changes Barack Obama promised you for your vote and
hoped you would get?

To sum up this president's administration, "I'm paying more for less,
while others pay nothing for more!"
